Broadcom Corporation Unveils Hybrid Satellite and Terrestrial SoC Broadcast Devices for STBs

Broadcom Corporation has unveiled a family of eight new hybrid satellite and terrestrial system-on-a-chip, or SoC, broadcast devices for set-top boxes, or STBs. The new series is engineered with pin-to-pin compatibility, allowing a single set-top design to be leveraged across the entire family. The new series brings Broadcom's high efficiency video compression (HEVC) technology to terrestrial markets, enabling broadcasters to utilize spectrum more efficiently than with current MPEG-4 video compression standards. As a result, broadcasters gain options to deliver more competitive channel line-ups and improved content quality through the same or lower spectrum footprint. Broadcom's new family of devices also combines HEVC with the advanced modulation efficiencies of DVB-S2, DVB-T2, ISDB-T and ATSC, and high-performance IP connectivity with MoCA 2.0. This unprecedented level of integration provides set-top manufacturers with a compelling value proposition for broadcasters as they continue service upgrades.

Broadcom Announces Lower Power Multi-Rate 100 Gigabit Ethernet Gearbox Physical Layer Transceiver

Broadcom Corporation announced the industry's higher performance, lower power multi-rate 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) gearbox physical layer transceiver (PHY), optimized for next-generation cloud-scale data center, enterprise and core networks. The 28 nm Broadcom BCM82792 PHY, is the first device to offer dual 100 Gigabit per second ports on a single gearbox chip and doubles the density of existing solutions while reducing power consumption by up to 30%, operating at 2 watts per port. The rapid growth of bandwidth consumption across data center, enterprise and core networks is driving the transition of line cards and systems from 10G/40G to 100G. Poised for rapid expansion, the 100G Ethernet market is expected to grow five-fold by 2016, according to analyst firm Infonetics(2). High-performance PHYs that support physical medium dependent sub layers, such as 100GBASE-SR4 and CR4, are a critical component for this rapid growth. Optimized for high-bandwidth networks, the dual-port Broadcom gearbox PHY has the ability to multiplex and demultiplex data across eight 25 Gbps channels to (or from) twenty 10 Gbps channels. The device can also be configured to support eight bi-directional lanes at 10 Gbps for 10GbE or 40GbE pass-through applications. High performance 25G/10G input/output eases routing constraints by providing for longer physical links. Broadcom also offers the BCM82790, a single port version of its 28 nm gearbox technology. This device delivers an easy upgrade path in a drop-in package compatible with Broadcom's current gearbox PHY. Key Features: First IEEE802.3bj Clause 91 forward error correction gearbox PHY.Three-dimensional eye mapper on each high-speed receiver (28 total). 100GbE/OTN VSR28 to CAUI interface. Integrated clean-up phase lock loop reduces bill of material cost. Single REFCLK (reference clock) input. Low latency architecture. Resources: As compared to competitive devices. Infonetics August 2014. Availability, Broadcom's BCM82792 dual port and BCM82790 single port gearbox PHYs are now sampling.

Broadcom Corporation Launches Ultra HD IPTV Service

Broadcom Corporation announced that its Ultra high-definition (HD) system-on-chip (SoC) technology has enabled Korea Telecom to launch one of the nation's first 4K in-home IPTV media service. Leveraging Broadcom's advanced compression and decoding technology, Korea Telecom's Olleh GiGA UHD(4K) set-top box (STB) delivers fluid 60 frame-per-second (fps) video with vivid 10-bit color at 4X the resolution conventional HD displays. Broadcom will demonstrate its full line of HEVC-enabled SoCs at IBC, September 12-16, RAI Amsterdam, Booth 2.C25. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom. With Broadcom's complete portfolio of HEVC-enabled devices, operators can substantially reduce the bandwidth required for Ultra HD or HD content transmission over IP, cable or satellite networks, and deliver these services to more locations throughout the home. The launch of the GiGA UHD(4K) STB and IPTV service provides consumers with an exciting new home entertainment experience while contributing to the broader proliferation of Ultra HD content production and delivery.
