Its inpatient rehabilitation hospitals offer specialized rehabilitative care services to patients in various disabilities or injuries due to medical conditions, such as strokes, hip fractures, and various debilitating neurological conditions. As of December 31, 2013, it operated 103 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, including 72 owned hospitals and 31 jointly owned hospitals in 28 states and Puerto Rico; operated 20 outpatient rehabilitation satellite clinics; and managed 3 inpatient rehabilitation units through management contracts, as well as 25 licensed and hospital-based home health agencies. The company was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.

HealthSouth Corporation and Mountain States Health Alliance Announce Joint Venture to Operate Quillen Rehabilitation Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee

HealthSouth Corporation and Mountain States Health Alliance announced they have signed an agreement to form a joint venture to own and operate the James H. & Cecile C. Quillen Rehabilitation Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn. The freestanding 26-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital will provide comprehensive physical rehabilitation to patients who have experienced stroke, trauma, brain and orthopedic injuries or other major illnesses or injuries. The comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation hospital will continue to provide critical clinical services that produce the high possible levels of recovery for patients in Johnson City and the surrounding areas and will remain in the current location at 2511 Wesley St. in Johnson City. The formation of the joint venture is subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals. The parties hope to finalize the joint venture by the end of 2014.

HEALTHSOUTH Corp. (NYSE:HLS) is looking for acquisitions. Jay Grinney, President and Chief Executive Officer of Healthsouth Corporation said, "We would be looking at potential acquisitions if we saw (a) the delivery system moving at a faster pace to some kind of coordinated care where it made sense for us to offer a broader range of post-acute services, and (b) if the regulatory environment got such that we felt comfortable moving into those adjacent services and with the risks that are attendant with those services”.

Healthsouth Declares Quarterly Dividend on Common Stock and Preferred Stock, Payable on April 15, 2014

HealthSouth Corporation announced that its board of directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend on its common stock of $0.18 per share and a quarterly cash dividend of $16.25 per share on its 6.5% Series A Convertible Perpetual Preferred Stock, each payable on April 15, 2014, to holders of record on April 1, 2014.
