Temasek Polytechnic Partners Royal Philips to Co-Create Solutions

A fully automated noodle-making machine will be the first in a pipeline of projects to be launched under a new strategic collaboration between Royal Philips and Temasek Polytechnic (TP). A new prototype of the Philips Noodle Maker, one of the first fully-automated noodle-making machines available on the market, will be the first joint project between the polytechnic and Philips. Designed for convenience in the making and customization of fresh noodles, the machine may potentially revolutionize how noodles are consumed at home. The machine, slated for launch later this year, will be put through its paces by students at TP's School of Design, who will test it in various aspects, such as ease of use and product design. As the machine does all the hard work, like kneading and mixing, noodle-making is made easier for the user as all one has to do is place raw ingredients, like eggs and flour, into the machine. In addition, the Noodle Maker provides users with many ways to customize their noodles, according to Philips. The fat and salt content can be controlled, and additional ingredients like spinach or carrots can be incorporated for creative noodle alternatives. TP's School of Applied Science, with its deep knowledge of local cuisines, will develop Asian noodle recipes designed for local palettes. These recipes will come with the machine for users to make the noodles themselves. As TP is knowledgeable about nutrition, and emphasizes healthy eating, the recipes will target segments of the population that include the young and the elderly. Through the testing and development process, Philips will be able to gather insights on local consumers, enabling it to better market the Noodle Maker to Singaporeans. Meanwhile, TP students will benefit from the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world scenarios with real-world business impacts, in the realm of food preparation. The collaborative effort on the Noodle Maker is but one of many projects in the pipeline for Philips and TP, as both parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), with the aim of co-creating solutions for Singapore and the region in areas such as consumer insights, and healthcare and gerontology. Through the collaboration, Philips and TP also aim to promote the exchange of knowledge, build both new and existing capabilities, and develop research competence. To this end, Philips and TP plan to embark on various projects and attachment programmes, conduct workshops and joint research, and share and set up research facilities.

Koninklijke Philips N.V Announces Earnings Results for the First Quarter of 2014

Royal Philips NV announced earnings results for the first quarter of 2014. For the quarter, the company announced net profit of EUR 138 million ($190 million), down from EUR 161 million in the same period a year earlier. Revenues were down 4.8% to EUR 5.02 billion. First-quarter profits declined as growth slowed in several divisions and consumers spent less on light bulbs. Profit margins worsened in part due to restructuring costs. Net profit slumped due to a weak performance by its new strategic activities in healthcare equipment. Net profit plunged because of a fall in underlying profit on a 12-month comparison. Earnings before interest, tax and amortization fell by 22.0% mainly because of a fall of profitability by the healthcare activities. Reported EBITA was EUR 314 million compared to EUR 402 million in the first quarter of last year. Adjusted EBITA, amounted to EUR 368 million compared to EUR 420 million in the first quarter of last year. Net income amounted to EUR 137 million compared to EUR 162 million a year ago. The year-on-year decrease reflects lower operational results and higher restructuring charges in 2014, which were partly offset by lower tax charges and financial expenses and one-off gains in results from investments in associates. In the quarter, the company had a free cash outflow of EUR 345 million.
